The receipt is the #1 most opened email, and yet most retailers just ignore that.

Optimizing it is a big opportunity for you to connect with your customer and offer added value. Here are the four basic elements of an email receipt. Number 1, you clearly state the purpose of the email in the subject line. Number 2, you let the customer know when they can expect to receive their order. Number 3, you confirm the address you’re going to send their product to. Number 4, you share where they can ask questions. You can also link to an FAQ if you notice you keep getting the same questions over and over again.

So what’s there to optimize in there? Here are four more things.

Number 1, ask your customer to join your community. Whether you connect with a customer on Facebook or with a hashtag on Instagram, encourage your customer to get plugged into your community and know they’re a valued member of your community.

Number 2, you can offer a discount code or free shipping for a future purchase within a limited time frame. This is called a bounce-back offer.

Number 3, encourage them to share the good news. Encourage your customer to share referral link with friends or family for discount on their next purchase.

And number 4, if you have any special promotions coming up for holidays or for their birthday, tell them to mark their calendar for upcoming discounts and promotions.
